Our Approach

Mumbai International Airport Limited (MIAL) integrates sustainability into its operations and decision-making. A dedicated Environment and Sustainability Department, supported by cross-functional teams, oversees the implementation of the ESG strategy. The strategy focuses on environmental responsibility, social impact, and long-term value through a strong governance framework, reinforcing MIAL’s commitment to sustainability.

Sustainability Stories

Climate Change

CSMIA integrates climate action into its sustainability efforts. Its carbon reduction targets align with India’s goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and the Paris Agreement’s aim to limit global warming below 2°C while working towards a 1.5°C target. CSMIA follows the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) recommendations, ensuring transparency and proactive measures in addressing climate change.

Water Stewardship

Water management is an essential part of CSMIA’s sustainability strategy. Water is recognised as a shared resource, and its responsible use is prioritised to support efficiency and long-term sustainability. By identifying risks, optimising usage, and reducing reliance on surface water, CSMIA ensures effective operations. The goal is to achieve Net Water Positive status. Continuous monitoring of consumption, quality, and discharge enables data-driven improvements in water management practices.

Waste Management

CSMIA’s waste management system follows the5R principle- Reduce, Reuse, Reprocess, Recycle & Recover —integrating industry best practices. The process includes five stages: Identification, Storage, Segregation, Recycling, and Disposal, with a focus on minimising waste. Waste from airport operations is categorised as hazardous or non-hazardous and managed in compliance with regulatory standards. Marked waste bins, dedicated e-waste bins, and an Organic Waste Converter (OWC) are used to recycle food waste, ensuring efficient and sustainable waste management.

Fleet Decarbonization

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability and reducing its carbon footprint, CSMIA is actively transforming airport mobility by accelerating the shift to eco-friendly transportation. By the end of FY 2025, CSMIA successfully transitioned 54 conventional fossil fuel-powered vehicles to Electric Vehicles (EVs). To support this transition, the airport has also installed 47 EV charging stations across its premises, reinforcing its dedication to green infrastructure and sustainable operations.

Land use and biodiversity

Land use and biodiversity preservation are part of CSMIA’s environmental strategy. Under the Adani Group's pledge on the World Economic Forum’s 1t.org platform, the goal is to grow 15.39 million trees. The ‘No Net Loss’ strategy focuses on sustainable practices such as developing green belts to reduce dust pollution, absorb carbon emissions, and support biodiversity, ensuring balance with the surrounding ecosystem.
 
 
 

Our People

CSMIA places its workforce at the core of its success, focusing on well-being, safety, and growth. Women represent 20% of the workforce, demonstrating a commitment to diversity. Employees received human rights training, and participated in skill enhancement programmes. CSMIA is committed to maintaining an inclusive, ethical, and supportive workplace that promotes personal development and strong employee-management relationships.

Safety and Well-Being

CSMIA prioritises workforce safety and well-being by maintaining high Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) standards. Risk control and mitigation are central to operations, supported by the 'Safety Excellence' initiative based on Human Performance Principles. Technology and digital solutions are integrated to manage risks and improve workplace safety. Beyond regulatory compliance, CSMIA fosters a work environment that supports both personal and professional growth.

Community Engagement

CSMIA in collaboration with the Adani Foundation, actively engages in community development initiatives aimed at creating long-term, sustainable impact. In the financial FY 2025, CSMIA organized a Free Eye Screening and Spectacle Distribution Drive, targeting school children and truck drivers. Additionally, during festive seasons, CSMIA partnered with the Mahila Arthik Vikas Mahamandal (MAVIM) to set up special counters at the airport. These counters showcased and sold handcrafted products made by local artisans, thereby empowering women and promoting economic upliftment within local communities.
